Bill hinted very often drum being in porn movies, often to make fun of the contrast the appearance of masculinity and obsessive sex with the reality of the men in the roles while still turning on the reader. This was roughly at the same time the idea of the hot ‘bear’ was materializing in gay life, men who weren’t superbly muscled, tiny-waisted, and smoothly handsome. Bill gave image to different bear types in the rapidly evolving fully liberated gay world. Many of course were “muscle bears”, still the staple of his drawings, but gay culture a decade or more after coming out in the 80’s was maturing, and so were the objects of commercial gay sex fantasies.
